A rug adds grace and elegance to a room. Turn the rug over so that the mat or jute is facing up. When rug edges fray and develop loose or stringy threads you can prolong the life of the rug and repair the worn edge yourself. First you might think about cutting a portion of the frayed carpet which may seem a straightforward task.

Use heavy string such an embroidery thread. But it is not so. You need to measure and mark your carpet with chalk first so that you can cut it straight and not go sideways. Using a utility knife to cut the edge is the handiest and probably the best tool for this task.

Please do not try this at home. Wear and tear from foot traffic usually shows up first at the edges and corners of area rugs. Apply an anti fray glue on any frayed edges. When the rug starts to fray or come apart because of wear it should be repaired before the damage.

Trim fuzzy frayed carpet edges down to the height of the rest of the carpet with scissors. This type of rug repair involves no practical experience or training.
